ASEANET - The ASEAN Network on Taxonomy
Attachment Program in Diagnostic of Leaf-miners at Nara Women University, Japan

The attachment program was held at the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University, Nara, Japan from August 01 – September 30, 2016 with the objective to improve the knowledge and skills of the two participants for the study of leafminers and to encourage them to contribute towards development of this field in the ASEAN region

The two officers participating in the attachment program were:

  • Ms Ariene Garcia Castillo, Senior Scientist, Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore, Animal & Plant Health Centre, Singapore
  • Dr. Yuvarin Boontop, Entomologist, Department of Agriculture, Bangkok, Thailand

During the attachment program they were supervised by Dr. Hiroaki SATO, Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University Japan. The selection of participants were based on the individual performance and evaluation results as well as observation and evaluation by all resource persons during the “Training Workshop on the Diagnostic of Leafminers of Agriculture Importance" that was held at the Research Center for Biology, Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), Cibinong, Bogor, Indonesia from 29 February to 11 March 2016. The two months attachment program includes a series of lectures given by prominent scientists from different universities in Japan, practical on how to prepare specimens of leaf-miners, rearing in the laboratory, field collections, DNA extraction and sequencing, and study visits to several institutions in Japan, etc.
